An urban girl with a Southern heart and Eastern roots, Nita Chawla's haunting, earthy and dark yet pop-infused sound align her with the likes of female singer-songwriters such as Sara Bareilles, Colbie Caillat and Adele.
Born in Mississipi and raised just outside of Washington, DC, Nita began her musical journey at the age of 3, singing Hindi songs with her parents and older sister. After years of classical piano training and messing around with the guitar, her first teenage heartbreak inspired her to start songwriting.
In 2007, she started off small, performing at the local Borders bookstore in her hometown (Germantown, MD). Since then, Nita's gyspy spirit has taken her to many venues around the country and the world such as venues in D.C. (The Lincoln Theatre, Rock and Roll Hotel, Hard Rock Cafe), New York City (National Underground, The Living Room), Los Angeles (Room Five, The Fox and Hounds) , and even international venues like Ronnie Scott's in London, UK.
With a few albums under her belt ("Fall Again EP" in 2009 and "Grace" in 2013), Nita is excited to release her new single, "The Way".
"The Way" is much more personal to her own challenges growing up as a 1st generation Indian-American (her parents moved to the U.S. from India in the late 70s). It captures the sacrifices they've made to make it in this country and create a good life for their children, their struggles and limitations and how the next generation can pave the way forward to fulfill their dreams and destiny. "The Way" will be released this October 12th , and the music video will release the following week, October 19th.
